Tuna Tubes for Small Boats That Keep Baits Alive

A lively slimy mackerel can turn a quiet offshore day into the bite everyone remembers. The problem for trailer-boat anglers is keeping that bait in good condition while travelling, trolling and working a spread with limited cockpit space. Tuna tubes for small boats provide a practical answer, but only when the tube size, water flow and installation suit both the bait and the hull.

A tube system is not simply a plastic pipe with a pump attached. It needs to hold the fish securely, send clean oxygenated water through its gills and drain without flooding the deck or starving the pump. Get those basics right and a compact boat can carry quality live baits for tuna, kingfish, Spanish mackerel and other hard-running predators without dedicating half the boat to a large livewell.

Why tuna tubes suit a smaller boat

Traditional live bait tanks work well for yakkas, slimies and small squid, but they take up room and can see baits battering themselves against the tank walls in rough water. A tuna tube supports each bait individually. The fish sits head-down in the tube while a steady stream of water enters around the head and exits through an overflow near the top.

That controlled flow is the key. A healthy bait does not need to constantly swim laps in a crowded tank, and it is less likely to lose scales or damage its nose during a bumpy run. Tubes also make bait selection straightforward. When a fish is needed, lift one bait, rig it and get it straight into the wash.

For small centre consoles, side consoles and cuddy cabins, the space saving is often the deciding factor. A narrow bank of two or three tubes can be fitted across a transom, along a cockpit side or on a removable bracket where a conventional tank would be impractical.

There is a trade-off. Tubes are best for long, narrow baitfish. They are not a replacement for a general-purpose livewell if your usual bait is poddy mullet, prawns or squid. They also demand more attention to plumbing, drainage and pump performance than a basic bucket-style tank.

Choosing tuna tubes for small boats

The right tube diameter depends on the bait you catch and the size of fish you intend to run. A tube that is too narrow can rub the bait and restrict water movement. One that is excessively wide lets the bait roll and knock itself around. The goal is enough clearance for the fish to sit naturally, with its head receiving a consistent water stream.

For yakkas and modest slimy mackerel, smaller-diameter tubes are often suitable. Larger slimies, bonito and substantial mackerel need more room. Before buying, consider the biggest bait you are realistically likely to catch, not only the small yakkas available at the ramp. A system that handles your usual baits but cannot accommodate the better class of slimy on a good bait school may become frustrating quickly.

Tube length matters too. It needs to support the bait without allowing its tail to bend sharply at the base. The upper edge should be positioned so baits are easy to retrieve, but high enough to prevent water escaping across the deck when the boat drops off a swell.

Mounting position is as important as tube size

Small boats are sensitive to extra weight aft. Several water-filled tubes, a pump, plumbing and a full esky can quickly change how the boat sits at rest and how it climbs onto the plane. Keep the installation balanced from port to starboard and avoid placing all the weight on one corner of the transom.

A transom-mounted setup is compact and convenient, particularly on an outboard-powered boat, but it must not interfere with motor tilt, steering, trim tabs, boarding access or the ability to use the rear deck. Side-mounted systems can improve access in some layouts, although they need secure bracing and careful hose routing.

If you fish from a very compact boat, a removable tube rack is worth considering. It lets you keep the cockpit open for inshore sessions, then fit the live-bait system when chasing pelagics offshore. Any removable setup still needs solid mounting points - live baits, water and rough conditions place far more load on fittings than they first appear to.

Build the water system around reliable flow

A tuna tube lives or dies by water supply. The pump must provide enough flow to keep every occupied tube running properly, not merely make water appear at the outlet while the boat is tied to the pontoon. Flow can change once a boat is moving, a pickup is partly aerated or a hose develops a kink.

Use a dedicated marine live-bait pump and size it for the number of tubes, their diameter and the length of plumbing. Check the pump’s real-world flow at the expected head height, rather than relying only on the largest number printed on the packaging. Long hose runs, bends, fittings and lift all reduce output.

Each tube should have an adjustable supply so the flow can be tuned to the bait. Too little water leaves fish lethargic. Too much can force a bait hard against the tube or create excessive splash and waste. A properly adjusted system delivers a firm, clean stream around the bait’s head without turning the tube into a fountain.

The intake location deserves just as much thought as the tubes themselves. It must remain submerged when the boat is stopped, running and sitting at a typical drift angle. It also needs protection from rope, weed and floating debris. A pickup that sucks air intermittently will quickly stress live baits, even if the pump is otherwise powerful.

Drainage is a safety issue, not an afterthought

Every tube needs a free-flowing overflow or drain that can handle the supply volume with margin to spare. Water should be directed overboard or into a properly designed drainage path, never allowed to pool in the cockpit. Test the system with all tubes operating before an offshore trip, then test it again with the boat loaded as it would be on a fishing day.

Where through-hull fittings are required, use marine-grade components, seal and support them correctly, and make sure hoses are double-clamped where appropriate. A failed hose below the waterline is not a minor inconvenience. It is a potential flooding risk.

Electrical work should be equally tidy. Fit the pump on a fused circuit, use marine-rated cable and connectors, protect wiring from chafe, and keep joins away from wet areas. A switch that is easy to reach from the helm lets you check flow immediately after launching and shut the system down when the boat is on the trailer.

Keeping live baits in good condition

The best tube system cannot revive poor bait handling. Catch baits with the lightest practical tackle, avoid overcrowding them in a temporary tank, and transfer each fish into a tube gently. Wet hands or a wet bait net reduce scale loss. Never grab a slimy mackerel with a dry rag or squeeze it around the body.

Fresh, clean seawater matters. Tubes recirculating stale water are not doing the same job as a system supplied continuously from outside the boat. If you are fishing in dirty harbour water, very warm shallows or areas with heavy surface debris, assess whether the water quality is suitable before relying on live baits for a full day.

Keep the top of each tube clear and avoid dropping sinkers, tools or leader packets where they can enter the water. Check baits regularly for signs of stress, including rolling, flared gills, loss of colour or repeated contact with the tube wall. A bait that is struggling is often better used promptly than carried until it is spent.

When rigging, match the hook placement and leader strength to the bait and target species. Heavy hardware can inhibit a smaller yakka, while a lively slimy intended for tuna or kingfish needs a rig that tracks straight at trolling speed. Have hooks, leaders, rubber bands and rigging tools organised before lifting a bait from the tube. The less time it spends out of water, the better.

A practical pre-trip check

Before leaving the ramp, run the tubes and confirm water is reaching every outlet. Look for leaks at fittings, make sure drains are keeping pace, and check that no hose is rubbing against a sharp edge. Once on the plane, glance back to confirm the system is still flowing as expected.

It is also worth carrying a few simple spares: a hose joiner, spare clamps, cable ties, a small length of hose and basic electrical repair gear. These take little room in a tackle storage box and can save a live-bait mission when a fitting comes loose.
